What are data brokers and how do I opt out?
Companies that gather and sell personal profiles. Most offer an opt-out process, though you may need to repeat it over time.
Data brokers are companies that collect information about people from public records, purchases, apps and other sources, then package it into profiles they sell or display. People-search sites are the most visible kind.
How opting out usually works
- Find your listing on the site.
- Look for a privacy, opt-out or “do not sell” link, often in the footer.
- Submit the listing and confirm by email if asked.
- Record the date and re-check in a few weeks.
Protect yourself while opting out
Use a separate email alias for removal requests. Give only the details needed to identify your listing. Be cautious of any site asking for a government ID unless you are confident it is legitimate.
Why listings come back
Brokers refresh their data regularly, so removed profiles can reappear. Repeat checks are part of the job. Paid removal services exist, but you can do the same steps yourself. This is general information, not legal advice. Next: search results.
